Dan Grading Exam 2005

Le 2 avril 2005, à 23h00, les karatékas avancés des différents dojos arrivaient au Honbu (maison mère) pour un passage de grades Shodan et Nidan (première et deuxième dan). Se présenter et participer à une telle épreuve est un privilège pour tout karatéka avancé. Ces examens sont reconnus comme étant très exigeants, tant au plan physique que mental. C’est Shihan Camille Ohan lui-même, maître 5^e dan et président de la FKCO, qui a dirigé cet examen impressionnant, qui commence traditionnellement à minuit et qui dure entre 7 et 8 heures. Aussi, cette année, l’examen a légèrement dévié de la tradition, et ce pour différentes raisons.

Shihan Ohan avait considéré annuler l’examen à cause du décès du Pape Jean-Paul II, mais au lieu de concrétiser cette pensée, il a décidé de lui dédier cette épreuve. Shihan Ohan a prononcé quelques mots au sujet du défunt Pape et l’a décrit non seulement comme un dirigeant religieux, mais comme un homme de courage et de persévérance, soit les mêmes vertus que cet examen doit inculquer à nos nouveaux shodans. Ce discours fut suivi d’une période de silence en l’honneur de ce grand homme.

La première partie de l’examen consistait à tester physiquement tous les karatékas présents, avec des exercices sans arrêt sur une période de trois heures. Chacun était évalué d’une façon ou d’une autre, incluant celui qui n’était pas candidat pour le changement de grade.

De plus, cette année, trois Senseis ont participé à l’intérieur de trois parties distinctes de l’examen (sanbon kumite, tameshiwari et kumite). Ceux-ci également furent évalués sur leurs instructions, données aux candidats en japonais, qui devaient être assez avancées pour les niveaux shodan et nidan. Cette décision du Shihan de laisser les senseis prendre en main certaines parties de l’examen a vu le jour il y a quelques années, mais s’est concrétisée surtout cette année. Cette initiative permet d’assurer une certaine relève pour la FKCO.

À l’exception d’une pause de 20 minutes, le déroulement de ce passage de grade était continu. Les candidats ont été testés et scrutés sous tous les angles par trois de nos professeurs les plus anciens : Shihan Camille Ohan, Sensei Peters et Sensei Vallée. Ces derniers avaient la tâche hardie d’évaluer chaque candidat à plusieurs niveaux.

Cet examen s’est finalement terminé à 8h00. Tous les candidats furent félicités pour un travail bien accompli. Par la suite, nous avons pris la traditionnelle photo de groupe et nous avons déjeuné tous ensemble pour célébrer le succès de nos nouveaux shodans.

On April 2^nd, 2005 at 11:00PM the FKCO Honbu (Head Dojo) was beginning to fill up with advanced karatekas from several dojos.  Attending and participating in a black belt exam is a privilege.  These exams are known to be very demanding both physically and mentally. Shihan Camille Ohan, 5^th degree black belt, Master and president of the FKCO coordinated this prestigious exam.  It started at its traditional time – midnight and usually lasts 7 to 8 hours.  It is a strenuous exam that tests the candidates at every level.  This year was slightly different for several reasons.

Shihan Ohan was considering canceling the exam due to the passing of Pope John Paul II. Instead he held the exam and dedicated it to this great man.  Shihan Ohan spoke of our late Pope not as a religious leader but as a person with great courage and persistence –exactly what this exam is meant to instill in our new shodans.  We all took a moment to remember this great man.

The first part of the exam was to test us physically with three hours of consistent drills.  Everyone was tested in one way or another –those who will be changing belts as well as everyone else who attended.  

This year three Senseïs were participating in three different parts of the exam (sanbon kumite, tameshiwari, and kumite). They too were tested on giving clear traditional Japanese instructions to the candidates that were challenging enough for their level.  Allowing senior level karatekas to conduct part of this exam is an initiative that Shihan Ohan started a few years ago, and stressing especially this year. This is an effort to preserve the continuation of the FKCO.

Besides one 20 minute break, the flow of the exam was continuous. The candidates were completely tested and each was scrutinized by three of our most senior teachers, Shihan Camille Ohan, Senseï Peters, and Senseï Vallée. They had the difficult task of grading each candidate on many levels.

They exam finally ended at 8AM. The candidates were all congratulated for a job well done. The traditional group picture was taken, and we all met for breakfast to celebrate the success of our new shodans.
