Competition 2001
I am proud to have participated in the 5th edition of the
North American Kyokushin Competition. A satisfying number of competitors
showed up from every affiliated school –St-Leonard, St-Vital, TMR, RDP,
Laval, Beaconsfield, Beloeil and all the way from Gaspe. Everyone felt the
energy in the College Laval Complex. I was especially impressed at how
well this year’s competition proceeded. Thanks to its promoter and
organizer Shihan Camille Ohan and his assistances Diane Leroux
and Roland Fabien, and all the experienced and new referees and
judges. The morning started with katas, and everyone demonstrated
enthusiasm and determination. In the afternoon we had both point system,
and semi-contact fights. The fights were very impressive. I was glad to
see new faces. Everything went smooth and on time, thanks to this well
organized team. This event concluded with the Full-Contact competition where 8
fighters (all judges and referees throughout the day) participated in this
sort of competition for the first time. The audience was very responsive
and supportive. This segment of the competition demonstrated skill,
determination, tenacity, adaptability, courage, strength, agility,
strategy, cardiovascular endurance and spirit. In other words, it
demonstrated Kyokushin Karate. Once the fighters are in the fighting
arena, their past does not exist, only the present. This is a fight with
no equipment, where every attack had a real impact. These fights did not
cause any critical injuries, however the resulting bruises left the
fighters with a temporary souvenir. A souvenir that they are proud to have
received, a souvenir that allows them to ponder on the past fight, ... and
future ones. Osu! Sensei Luciano Paparella
